Original Medicare doesn’t cover everything. A common question for Medicare beneficiaries is, then, “is there a Medicare plan that does cover everything?”
What’s Covered Under Original Medicare
If you’re asking this question, you likely already know that Original Medicare alone does not cover everything. For a plan that does, you will have to look into alternative or supplemental options.
But first, you should have an idea about what is covered under Parts A and B. You receive inpatient, short-term emergency care benefits through Part A. In other words, your hospital and nursing care facility visits are covered, but up to a certain limit. After more than 60 days in the hospital in one year, you must cover all of the expenses out-of-pocket.
Part B covers a large variety of medical services with your doctor’s approval. There are certain limits on the amount of coverage you receive, but the potential items and services, such as a variety of preventative care and Durable Medical Equipment (DME), are fairly flexible.
More Coverage with Medicare Advantage
The question is, however, is there a Medicare plan that truly covers everything. Medicare Advantage gets you one step closer to fuller coverage. Unlike Original Medicare, Advantage plans coordinate your regular healthcare to reduce costs, while still featuring the same benefits and more.
Checkups, screenings, and limited dental, vision, and hearing care are all potential additional benefits of Medicare Advantage. On top of that, your out-of-pocket costs, including copayments and coinsurance fees, are lowered for said healthcare.
Bottom line is, while Medicare Advantage may not cover everything, it has quite a bit to offer beyond Original Medicare on its own.
The Most Coverage with a Supplement Plan
Supplements, however, are likely the best option that covers just about everything.
Like the name implies, supplement (Medigap) plans will literally “supplement” your Original Medicare coverage. This means that it will add a lot of cost-coverage and benefits.
There are 10 Medigap plans—A, B, C, D, F, G, J, K, M, and N. Any of these options are great for adding that extra coverage you’re looking for. But, only 3 stand out above the rest and come as close to everything as possible.
Plan F has the absolute most coverage of all of the supplement plans, including:
- Part A Coinsurance & Hospital Costs
- Part B Coinsurance/Copayment
- First 3 Pints of Blood for Transfusions
- Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance/Copayment
- Skilled Nursing Care Facility Coinsurance
- Part A Deductible
- Part B Deductible
- Part B Excess Charges
- 80% of Foreign Travel Emergency Care
None of these benefits are included in Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage. Plans G and C come in a close second. Plan G covers Part B excess charges, but not the Part B deductible, and Plan C does the opposite.
