Medigap Plan D
Medigap Plan D provides a supplement insurance policy that sits somewhere between the most basic and most comprehensive plans.
What is included as part of Medigap Plan D cover
The benefits of Medigap Plan D are straightforward, including all of the benefits of lesser Medigap plans but with a few additional clauses and features. In the simplest terms, Plan D covers all of the ‘out-of-pocket’ and excess expenses accrued under an Original Medicare plan, but without any mention of Part B deductibles or Part B excess charges. As Part B covers medical treatment and outpatient medical care, this essentially means that the consumer will be responsible for their own Doctor’s bills outside of their Medicare coverage.
The full list of benefits of Medigap Plan D include:
- Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs after Medicare benefits run out
- Medicare Part A hospice and palliative care coinsurance and copayments
- Medicare Part B copayments and coinsurance
- First three pints of blood for medical procedures
- Coinsurance relating to care in skilled nursing facilities
- Medicare Part A deductible

How Much Does Medigap Plan D Cost?
Cost always plays a big part in knowing and deciding which Medigap plan to sign up for as part of your supplement insurance, with most providers operating on a basis where the more comprehensive the plan, the more it will cost the consumer to sign up for. As Plan D sits somewhere in the middle, it is generally viewed as one of the more affordable plans. However, the final cost will vary depending on the local area and the private provider offering the plan.
